All about Me: Iriomote Cat

The Iriomote Cat is a wild cat that is the size of a domesticated one. Population:100. It has brown fur with darker brown stripes around the legs. Its tail is rather short, though. The name comes from it's inhabited island, Iriomotejima. It is a nocturnal hunter and eats animals like owls, fruit bats, robins, turtles, reptiles and even the occasional wild pig! It loves to swim around. This cat is found all over the island. It avoid heavily populated areas, and prefers coastal areas like beaches.

Barely 100 of these cats survived due to habitat destruction and over hunting. The meat of the cat is considered to be a yummy local delicacy and a number of them have also been killed on the roads. Despite these problems, many of the inhabitants of Iriomotejima are proud of their rare cat. The IUCN has prohibited anymore hunting of this cat, but this still does not stop illegal poaching.
